Arrival in Managua and transfer to overnight in Masaya. Visit of the "Pueblos Blancos" (White Villages) flowered streets of Catarina and potters' workshops of San Juan de Oriente. Afternoon, visit of the mineral world of active Masaya Volcano. Masaya Volcano is VERY active and you are able to look straight down into its crater. There are a number of very interesting trails around the volcano and it is possible to walk inside an old lava tube, and watch to the red lava light through a big hole in the top of the magma chamber. During your visit you will see all vehicles visiting the volcano pointing downhill. This is a requirement of visiting the volcano as it allows for a fast escape should this wonderful volcano erupt!
Early flight over the country to reach the Atlantic Coast. After a walk in the old fishing quarter and the port of Bluefields, we sail to Rama Cay, island of the Rama Indian, fishermen whose daily life we'll share. During daylight, we'll use the engine, the local sail or the oar to go with the Rama Indians to fish, to explore in wild surroundings: a deserted island, remote lagoons, forgotten rivers, making stopover at temporal Rama camps, between mangrove and giant palms. Welcomed in the pastor family, we'll discover on the island a natural lifestyle, rich in social life, interacting in with the family as they carry on their daily lives.
Today we have a change of landscape: By boat, bus and private minibus or 4x4, we'll cross the ranges of Chontales to reach a real "Far-West". Here took place some of the local "gold rushes" of the new world. But actually, gold diggers still use methods from the 19th century before steam powered companies appeared. With some miners, we'll discover some extraction wells, galleries and different kind of old gold ore mills in activity. Installed at the small coffee farm of Don Ramón, we also discover an ecological way to cultivate coffe under forest shade and the whole process that leads to a delicious cup of coffee. (there is also an obligatory practice of roasting coffee with help of Doña Gabriela !). At night, we'll enjoy popular songs with the guitar of Don Ramon. We'll also hike in the coffee plantation and the natural private reserve of Las Brumas, to see some red frogs, humming birds, Oropendula, monkeys or even maybe a slot. We have also the opportunity to visit the neighbor village, with its pure Far-West style streets and the gold and leather workshop. Finally we say goodbye for a long drive to reach San Miguel village on the shore of Lake Cocibolca.
Natural Paradise! Four days of adventures on rivers and in the rain forest, for lovers of nature, wetlands, birds, magic sounds of Amazonian nights and those who appreciates the primitive arts and history. From Cocibolca Lake, we'll explore the snaky San Juan River and discover in the lush, some secrets that reveal its past glory. We'll stay a night in the Wildlife Refuge Los Guatusos that counts 62% of the 644 species of birds described in the country and so many natural wonders: orchids, sumptuous butterfly, turtles, crocodiles, etc. We'll enjoy to learn some History about famous pirates exploit in the fort of El Castillo which was defending access to the heart of the Spanish colony. We'll appreciate also the archipelago of Solentiname, where the arts of painting and sculpture seems to promote a way of living in harmony with nature. Wonderfull views from the plane when we flight back to Managua, over the lake and the active volcanoes of Ometepe's island. Quick visit of the capital Managua.
To crown our stay, visit of Granada : visit of the traditinal fruits and species market, a family workshop of havana cigars, the 380° view above the roof tops of this old colonial city. We'll visit the main colonial streets and churches, hiking and in a horse-drawn carriage. Afternoon, we go to visit Masaya city, some artisans' workshops and the famous handicrafts market.
