Wild Corcovado, Costa Rica - 8 days

Corcovado tent camp - Pacuare Whitewater - Rainforest hikes - Southern Pacific beaches

After an exhilarating two-day whitewater rafting trip, we head toward the untamed Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park - one of the only places in Costa Rica where large groups of the endangered scarlet macaw still color the sky.

Off the beaten path enough to avoid the Costa Rica vacation crowds, Corcovado will reward you with spectacular scenery and unmatched opportunities to spot elusive wildlife. We'll use the park's trail system to stroll along the deserted beach, marked in places with cascading waterfalls, as well as to penetrate the dense interior rainforest. National Geographic calls Corcovado "the most biologically intense place on Earth" - surely a destination to put on your "don't miss" list!

Day 1

Arrival in San Jose and overnight in this bustling city.

Day 2 - 3

This morning you head east towards the Caribbean and the Class III-IV whitewater of the Pacuare River for two days of whitewater rapids, jungle-clad canyons, and spectacular waterfalls. One of Costa Rica's most exciting whitewater vacations, you'll camp along the river tonight. You explore some of Costa Rica's remote rainforest in Braulle National Park, and, of course, plunge through the exhilarating rapids of the Pacaure River. It's back to San Jose at the end of Day 3 in time for dinner on your own and a relaxing evening before tomorrow's flight to the wild Osa Peninsula. (2B,2L,D)

Day 5

After breakfast, you'll fly back to San Jose and be met at the airport for the 3 hour overland transfer to Arenal, stopping for lunch en route. Dormant for centuries, Arenal Volcano exploded in a massive eruption of molten lava and ash in 1968. Since that time, it has continued to belch great clouds of ash and occasional lava. It is now one of the world's most active volcanoes and volcanologists from all over the world come here to study this tropical volcano. Spend the afternoon enjoying the lodge and forest. (B/L/D)

Day 6 - 7

This morning you'll hike into the national park for a close-up exploration of a lava flow. Mid-morning you leave the Arenal for our 4 hour trip around Lake Arenal to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, one of the richest and most diverse tropical cloudforests on the continent. If the weather is nice, a shortcut across Lake Arenal may save us an hour! Founded in 1972, the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve encompasses six different ecological life zones and protects more than 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, and upwards of 1,500 plant species. In your explorations you'll keep watch for one of the area's most famed residents, the Resplendant Quetzal. On the morning of Day 7 you'll hike through the reserve, viewing the misty forest with its dense vegetation and majestic trees. The afternoon is yours to wander on your own, or enjoy one of the many optional activities available in the area. (B)

Day 8

On your final morning you will visit a private rainforest reserve before an early afternoon transfer takes you back to San Jose in time to relax and enjoy your last evening of your Costa Rica vacation in the city. (B)

Day 9

Return flight home.
